ANKARA (AA) – Global coronavirus recoveries crossed the 1.9 million mark on Thursday, according to a running tally by the US’ Johns Hopkins University.

The university's data showed a total of 1,901,079 million people won the battle against COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

The number of cases crossed the 5 million mark, while 328,227 deaths have been recorded to date.

The US has the highest number of recoveries with 294,312, followed by Germany with 157,916 and Spain with 150,376.

But the US continues to be the worst-hit country, with the highest numbers of infections and deaths – over 1.5 million cases and more than 93,000 fatalities.

The UK has the second-highest death toll with 35,786, and Russia has the second-highest number of cases with 308,705.

Overall, the virus has spread to 188 countries since it first emerged in China in December.

Despite the rising number of cases, most who contract the virus suffer mild symptoms before making a recovery.
