S. Africa: Man gets 32 years for killing ex-girlfriend

JOHANNESBURG (AA) – A Johannesburg high court on Thursday sentenced a 28-year-old man to 32 years in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend.

On Wednesday, the court found Sandile Mantsoe, 28, guilty of stabbing to death Karabo Mokoena, 22, and then burning her dead body.

Mokoena’s murder happened last year and sparked outrage and protests across the Gauteng province, which includes the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria.

Women used hashtags such as #MenAreTrash to condemn the incident. Several men joined their campaign to fight women abuse.

Acting Judge Peet Johson said Thursday that the accused did not show remorse and was a danger to society.

Johson said Mantsoe tried his best to conceal the burnt body but fortunately law enforcement found it and brought him to justice.

The judge told Mantsoe, if he thought his riches would get him everywhere, it now had got him nowhere.

South Africa has one of the highest cases of rape and murder across the world, with most victims killed by their partners.
