S. Africa: Archbishop Desmond Tutu hospitalized

By Hassan Isilow

JOHANNESBURG (AA) – Former South African anti-apartheid campaigner Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has admitted himself to a Cape Town hospital for a recurring infection, according to his family.

“He is expected to remain in hospital for a week or two,” Tutu’s daughter Thandeka Tutu-Gxashe said in a short statement late Wednesday.

The 84-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate underwent similar treatment last year, but it is unclear what infection he is suffering from.

The retired Anglican archbishop of Cape Town rose to prominence in the 1980s for his strong role in the opposition to apartheid rule in South Africa.

Last month, he celebrated 40 years of his service in priesthood at a ceremony held in Johannesburg.
