Rocket-making material seized near Egypt border: Israel

By Kaamil Ahmed

JERUSALEM (AA) – Israeli customs authorities said Tuesday that they had uncovered four tons of chemicals, which, they alleged, could be used for manufacturing long-range rockets.

A statement from the Israeli Tax Authority said sacks of ammonium chloride had been found at the border with Egypt hidden inside a 40-ton salt shipment headed for the blockaded Gaza Strip.

The authority said the trove of chemicals could be used to make hundreds of rockets of the kind that are occasionally fired at Israel by Gaza-based Palestinian resistance groups.

An almost decade-long Israeli-Egyptian blockade on the Gaza Strip has drastically limited the amount of goods entering the coastal enclave, including construction materials needed for rebuilding homes damaged during Israel’s 2014 military onslaught on the territory.
