ROME (AA) – Workers in several vital sectors went on a general strike to protest the low payment and insufficient social rights in Italy on Friday.

The strike in fields of transportation, health, education and fire was organized by public and private sector employees upon the call of various syndicates.

It is expected to bring some services to a standstill.

ATAC — a public bus transport company serving in the capital Rome — announced that the entire transportation network in the city would be affected by the strike.

Some of the lines will run between 5 p.m. (0300 GMT) and 8 p.m. (0600 GMT) local time in Italy.

The Italy’s state-run railroad company Ferrovie dello Stato said that the high-speed train lines would operate regularly, but regional trains would serve at certain hours in the morning and evening.

Services between Rome's central railway station Termini and Fiumicino Airport will not be affected by the strike.
