EDIRNE, Turkey (AA) – At least 278 undocumented migrants have been held in northwestern Turkey, a security source said Monday.

The migrants were nabbed during a gendarmerie patrol in Orhaniye, Bosnakoy, Ipsala and Meric districts of Edirne province, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media.

Among the migrants were Syrian, Moroccan, Palestinian, Iraqi, Pakistani, Afghan, and Bangladeshi nationals, who were later taken to a provincial migration authority, the source added.

Turkey has been a main route for refugees and asylum seekers trying to cross into Europe, especially since the beginning of the civil war in Syria.
