OIC hails Palestine’s assumption of G77 chairmanship

<p>JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (AA) – The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Wednesday welcomed Palestine’s assumption of the chairmanship of the G77 group of nations. </p> <p>In a statement, the OIC said the move &quot;consolidates [Palestine’s] political and legal status in the international arena and confirms its right to full UN membership”.</p> <p>The OIC also voiced its support for ongoing efforts by the Palestinian leadership to exercise Palestine’s right to join international organizations and accede to international conventions.</p> <p>Last October, the UN General Assembly endorsed Palestine’s bid for the G77 chairmanship, with 146 assembly members voting in favor while the U.S., Israel and Australia voted against the motion. </p> <p>Palestine currently holds non-member observer status at the UN, which allows it to vote on General Assembly draft resolutions and participate in UN organizations.</p>
