ISTANBUL (AA) – Fans of the Manchester United football club protested its owner before a match against Liverpool on Thursday.

The crowd gathered outside Old Trafford Stadium and called for the resignation of the Glazer family.

UK police tightened security measures and blocked the venue with barriers.

Fans stormed Old Trafford on May 2 to protest the ownership, chanting "we want Glazers out" for its participation in the European Super League.

Many previously invaded the pitch before the Manchester United-Liverpool match as it was postponed because of safety concerns following protests.

The club were among 12 founding teams of the breakaway Super League.

The league project collapsed after six clubs including Manchester United, Italy’s AC Milan, Inter Milan and Spain’s Atletico Madrid withdrew.

Forbes magazine said the Glazer family from the US bought Manchester United for $1.4 billion in 2006.

The family is one of the richest families in the US with a $4.7-billion net worth, according to Forbes in 2015.
