GUWAHATI, India – Landslides in northeastern India killed nine people on Wednesday morning, officials said.
The fatalities in Manipur state, near the border with Myanmar, include eight children, said Shheikh Aasif Shah, sub-deputy collector of Tamenglong district, where the incident occurred.
“The rescue operations are going on in full swing with collaboration of the district administration, police and local authorities, ” he added.
The landslides occurred after torrential rains hit the state in the last few days.
Chief Minister Biren Singh said: “I’m deeply saddened to know that nine precious lives were lost due to landslides at three places in Tamenglong headquarters. ”
