Labour suspends MP over alleged anti-Semitic post in UK

LONDON (AA) – Labour parliamentarian Naz Shah has been suspended from her party in the U.K. over an alleged anti-Semitic post she made on Facebook, a party spokesman announced Wednesday.

According to the spokesman, “Jeremy Corbyn and Naz Shah have mutually agreed that she is administratively suspended from the Labour Party by the general secretary. Pending investigation, she is unable to take part in any party activity and the whip is removed.”

British Prime Minister David Cameron had earlier criticized Shah in the parliament.

“Anti-Semitism is racism and we should call it out and fight it wherever we see it. The fact that we have got a Labour Member of Parliament with the Labour whip who made remarks about the transportation of people from Israel to America and talked about a ‘solution’ is quite extraordinary,” Cameron said.

Shah had also apologized in the parliament over her remarks.

“I accept and understand that the words I used caused upset and hurt to the Jewish community and I deeply regret that,” she said.

In a statement she penned for Jewish News on Wednesday, Shah also said the language she used was wrong.

“What’s important is the impact these posts have had on other people. I understand that referring to Israel and Hitler as I did is deeply offensive to Jewish people for which I apologize,” she said.

Shah had shared a post on Facebook in 2014, which read: “Solution for Israel-Palestine conflict. Relocate Israel into the Unites States.”
