Istanbul to host intl space science event

ANKARA (AA) – Istanbul this summer will host one of the world’s premier space science events, Turkish Science, Industry and Technology Minister Fikri Isik told Anadolu Agency on Thursday.

The 41st Space Research (COSPAR) Scientific Assembly will take place between July 30 and August 7 at the Istanbul Congress Center, as hosted by the Turkish Scientific and Technological Research Council (TUBİTAK).

“A number of international organizations are expected to be at the event, especially the U.S., Chinese, Japanese, and Russian space agencies, along with the European Space Agency,” said Isik, joining 3,500 participants from 60 countries.

The event will discuss the earth’s surface, meteorology, climate, the atmospheres of other planets, space weather, the solar system and planets, space science and technology, material science in space, life in space, and physics in space.

“The event will open new horizons for the researchers in our country who have been unable to participate [in such events] held in remote countries,” he said.

He added that the event will especially allow young scientists to interact with researchers from various field and different countries.

COSPAR was established by the International Council for Science in 1958.

The Scientific Assembly organizes conferences to increase the sharing of information to contribute to scientific research in the field of space.

TUBITAK became a member of the assembly in 1996.

The congress is held every two years in different countries.
