Israeli forces kill 1 in skirmish in occupied Golan

<p>QUNEITRA, Syria (AA) – One person was killed and five others injured by Israeli forces in the occupied Golan Heights, according to local sources.</p> <p>Late Wednesday, about a dozen Israeli soldiers stormed Golan’s Al-Shahhar refugee camp, local sources said.</p> <p>An unidentified armed individual opened fire on the soldiers, who responded by shooting him dead, the sources added.</p> <p>They also said that at least five civilians had been injured — including women and children — when the soldiers indiscriminately opened fire while withdrawing from the area.</p> <p>UN peacekeeping forces were reportedly deployed to the camp in the immediate wake of the skirmish.</p> <p>Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee appeared to confirm the incident, saying: &quot;In the early hours of last night, the IDF [Israeli Defense Forces] came under fire in an isolated area near the border fence with Syria.”</p> <p>Israeli forces retaliated, he added, without sustaining any casualties.</p> <p>The Al-Shahhar refugee camp is located on the northern outskirts of Golan’s city of Quneitra.</p> <p>The camp currently hosts hundreds of Syrian refugees who fled their homes after the eruption of the Syria conflict in 2011.</p>
