Israeli diplomat returns to Cairo after 4-month hiatus

CAIRO (AA) – Israeli Consul Yehuda Golan arrived in Cairo on Wednesday following four months without any Israeli diplomatic presence in Egypt, according to a source at Cairo International Airport.

“Golan arrived at the airport accompanied by a security detail,” the source, preferring anonymity as he was not authorized to talk to the media, told Anadolu Agency.

Last November, Israeli Ambassador to Cairo David Geoffran abruptly left Egypt — accompanied by the embassy staff — without providing a reason.

At the time, British newspaper The Daily Telegraph reported that the ambassador and his staff had departed for “security reasons”.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry, for its part, had stated: “The ministry wasn’t given a reason for his [the ambassador’s] departure; it has not received any notification from the Israeli embassy in this regard.”
