JERUSALEM (AA) – Israel’s military has sent an extra battalion to Hebron in the occupied West Bank after a spike in alleged attacks over the weekend.
“In accordance with situation assessments following recent terror attacks, the IDF [army] is deploying a battalion to reinforce the area of Hebron,” the Israeli military tweeted Saturday evening.
Three Palestinians have been shot dead by Israeli forces after allegedly carrying out stabbing or car-ramming attacks in and around Hebron since Friday.
A Jordanian man was also shot dead in a similar incident before Friday prayers in East Jerusalem.
In the latest of a sudden spike in alleged attacks, an Israeli soldier was injured and a suspected attacker was shot by soldiers near the Efrat settlement in the occupied West Bank on Sunday morning, the Israeli military said in a statement.
The Israeli army has also closed off entrances to the Hebron-area town of Bani Naim, the home of two Palestinians accused of carrying out a ramming attack near the Israeli settlement of Kiryat Arba, the Palestinian Ma’an news agency reported.
More than 200 Palestinians have been killed in alleged attacks or in clashes with Israeli forces over the past year, while 35 Israelis have been killed in the same period.
