YOGYAKARTA, Indonesia (AA) – The leader of a Daesh-linked group was charged on Thursday for masterminding the 2016 Jakarta bombing that killed eight people, including the attackers.
Prosecutor Anita Dewayani charged Aman Abdurrahman of the Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD) group for asking his supporters to carry out the attack at the busy Thamrin Street of the capital.
“The defendant planned and mobilized another person to commit a criminal act of terrorism by deliberately using violence or threat of violence, ” said Dewayani during the hearing in South Jakarta Court, according to kompas.com.
Abdurrahman ordered four people to detonate a bomb made by JAD members in Cirebon, West Java.
He originally wanted the bomb to go off at Sabang Street, where a lot of foreigners pass through. However, the bomb exploded near a shopping centre and a Starbucks cafe on Jan. 14, 2016.
Dewayani said Abdurrahman mobilized people in several ways, including by giving religious lectures in several cities across Indonesia.
Abdurrahman was charged with violating anti-terrorism laws which may get him a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
