BERLIN (AA) – Concerns over the future of the EU-Turkey agreement on refugees in the wake of Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu’s resignation announcement were dismissed by the German government on Friday.
“Chancellor [Angela] Merkel has so far enjoyed very good cooperation with the Turkish Prime Minister Davutoglu and all other Turkish representatives and we expect that this good and constructive cooperation will continue with the new Turkish premier,” Merkel’s deputy spokesman Georg Streiter said at a news conference in Berlin.
He added: “That is not an EU-Davutoglu agreement, it is an EU-Turkey agreement. The EU and Germany will continue to meet all their commitments agreed and we also expect this from the Turkish side.”
On Thursday, Davutoglu announced he would be stepping down later this month.
The development led to worries over the future of the deal to stop illegal migration, which was hammered out by Merkel and Davutoglu.
