Galatasaray get home win to join Super Lig title race

ANKARA (AA) – Galatasaray won against BtcTurk Yeni Malatyaspor 1-0 in Sunday's Turkish Super Lig match to be among the title contenders.

Turkish forward Adem Buyuk scored the winning goal on the penalty kick in the first half in Istanbul's Turk Telekom Stadium.

Galatasaray were awarded a penalty when Turkish midfielder Emre Akbaba was brought down by BtcTurk Yeni Malatyaspor's Robin Yalcin in the penalty box in the 43rd minute,.

In the 57th minute, visitors' winger from Congo Thievy Bifouma was fouled by Galatasaray's Dutch midfielder Ryan Donk in the penalty area and BtcTurk Yeni Malatyaspor were also given a penalty.

However, referee Alper Ulusoy disallowed the penalty kick after VAR (Video Assistant Referee) check as Bifouma was offside when he had the possession of the ball.

Galatasaray earned their sixth consecutive win in the league and boosted their morale before next week's derby against fierce rivals Fenerbahce.

– Race for title

Things are getting hot on top of the Super Lig as this division has been witnessing a fiery race for the 2020 title.

Earlier Sunday, Trabzonspor topped the division with 44 points and they have an additional match to play.

The second-placed Medipol Basaksehir from Istanbul have 43 points in 22 matches.

Galatasaray have 42 points to be in the third place.

Having lost to Trabzonspor 2-1 on Sunday, title contenders Demir Grup Sivasspor moved down to the fourth spot with 42 points.
