Galatasaray beat Fenerbahce to end nine-year hoodoo

ANKARA (AA) – Galatasaray Doga Sigorta defeated Fenerbahce Beko 80-75 Wednesday to end a nearly decade-long curse at their bitter rivals' venue.

The latest results marked the first time since 2011 that the team has defeated Fenerbahce Beko on its home court as well as a huge upset for them.

Fenerbahce Beko headed to the dressing room with a 39-38 lead, but Galatasaray Doga Sigorta came back in the third quarter, making it 57-53.

In the fourth quarter, Galatasaray Doga Sigorta netted 23 points while Fenerbahce Beko scored 22, with the visiting team becoming the victors with 80-75.

Fenerbahce Beko fans expressed their disappointment with the team’s performance once the game ended.

Galatasaray’s Greek-American center Zachary Auguste played a key role in the win, scoring 17 points and making 15 rebounds at the Ulker Sports and Event Hall.

American point guard John Roberson dropped 15 points against Fenerbahce Beko.

Galatasaray Doga Sigorta’s U.S. forward Alex Poythress contributed 13 points to the away victory.

Fenerbahce Beko's French star Nando De Colo tallied 15 points and eight assists.

Turkish shooting guard Meli̇h Mahmutoglu scored 14 points while American forward Derrick Williams clocked up 13 points for Fenerbahce Beko.

Following their defeat, Fenerbahce Beko are in third spot in the ING Basketball Super Lig standings with a 15-5 win/loss record.

Fifth-placed Galatasaray Doga Sigorta has won 14 games out of 20.

Galatasaray pleased their fans with their derby victory after the Galatasaray football team beat Fenerbahce 3-1 last weekend in an eventful match in the Turkish Super Lig, ending a more than two-decade-long drought in derby victories at their archrivals' stadium.
