WASHINGTON (AA) – A former Dallas police officer who shot dead her neighbor after mistaking his apartment for her own was found guilty of murder Tuesday.

Amber Guyger, who is white, killed Bothan Jean, who is black, in September 2018. She returned home after a 15-hour shift, and while still uniform, went to the wrong floor of her apartment complex.

She entered Jean’s apartment and after what she said she mistook him for a burglar, opened fire and shot him twice.

Jean died after being transported to the hospital.

The Dallas Morning News reported that cheers broke out in the hallway outside the courtroom after the jury announced the verdict.

Prosecutors argued Guyger should have known she was in the wrong apartment, and that Jean was not a threat.

Jurors will decide Guyger’s sentence, said the newspaper.
