BRUSSELS (AA) – European Union on Wednesday voiced concern over increasing number of arrests of human rights defenders and political activists in Egypt.

In a statement, European External Action Service emphasized that respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms can ensure sustainable stability and security.

“The increasing number of arrests of human rights defenders, political activists and bloggers in the latest weeks in Egypt is therefore a worrying development,” the statement said.

“We expect the Egyptian authorities to respect Egypt's Constitution and international obligations,” it added.

Recently, prominent activists Hesam Mohammadian, Shadi al-Ghazali, and Vail Abbas were arrested in Egypt.
