BRUSSELS (AA) – The European Union is investigating a possible leak of information after a report that hackers targeted the bloc’s diplomatic communications for several years.

“We are aware of the allegations and actively investigating the issue,” said the bloc in a statement.

“The Council Secretariat does not comment on allegations nor on matters relating to operational security,” it added.

On Tuesday, the New York Times reported that hackers had infiltrated the EU’s diplomatic communication network for three years.

“The techniques that the hackers deployed over a three-year period resembled those long used by an elite unit of China’s People’s Liberation Army,” the report added.
