ANKARA (AA) – The EU condemned on Thursday the knife attack in France that killed three people.

“We condemn in the strongest possible terms these attacks which represent attacks on our shared values,” read the statement. “We stand united and firm in our solidarity with France, with the French people and the Government of France – in our common and continued fight against terrorism and violent extremism.”

The statement urged world leaders to “work towards dialogue and understanding among communities and religions rather than division.”

The attack occurred at the Church of Notre Dame de l'Assumption in NIce. Police arrested the attacker, taking him to a hospital as he sustained gunshot wounds, according to local media.

The three victims include a woman, whose throat was cut inside the building; another woman, who was gravely injured and took refuge in a nearby cafe where she died from her injuries; and a 45-year-old man, the church warden who was fatally stabbed.

France raised its terrorism alert to the highest level following the attack.
