Egypt receives third German-built attack submarine

<p>By Rabie Abu Zamil</p> <p>CAIRO (AA) – Egypt on Friday received its third submarine from Germany as part of a larger procurement agreement for four attack submarines.</p> <p>A handover ceremony in the German city of Keil was attended by Egyptian Naval Commander Ahmed Khaled.</p> <p>Almost 74 meters long, the 1400-class diesel-electric attack submarine can sail uninterrupted for 11,000 miles (roughly 1,775 kilometers) at a maximum speed of 21 knots.</p> <p>It also has the ability to launch missiles and torpedoes.</p> <p>Egypt announced the purchase of two of the German subs in 2011, ordering two more three years later. </p> <p>The Egyptian Navy received the first of four submarines in late 2016.</p>
