Egypt appoints new intelligence chief

CAIRO (AA) – Abbas Kamel, director of the office of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, has been appointed acting chief of Egypt’s national intelligence agency.

According to a Thursday statement issued by al-Sisi’s office, Kamel will head up Egypt’s General Intelligence Directorate until a permanent director can be appointed.

The statement did not explain why Khaled Fawzi, who had served as intelligence chief since late 2014, had been removed from the post.

Notably, the move comes shortly before presidential elections set for March of this year.
