Disgraced Turkish Cypriot millionaire arrives home

LEFKOSA, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (AA) – Asil Nadir, the Turkish Cypriot tycoon jailed for 10 years in 2012 for theft, returned to his home in Northern Cyprus on Saturday.

Nadir, 74, was convicted of stealing 28.6 million pounds ($41.2 million) from his Polly Peck business empire between 1987 and 1990 by a court in London after he returned to the U.K. in 2010 to face trial. He had fled to Northern Cyprus, which has no extradition treaty with Britain, in 1993.

The millionaire was released from a British prison on Thursday and returned to Turkey under a prisoner transfer agreement. He was conditionally released from Istanbul’s Silivri prison on Friday.
