NINEVEH, Iraq (AA) – A tribal chieftain was shot dead by suspected Daesh militants in Iraq’s northern Nineveh province on Tuesday, according to a local police official.

Militants disguised in military uniform stormed the house of Sheikh Ragheb al-Badrani in the town of al-Emrini, south of Mosul, and opened fire on him, killing him on the spot, Police Colonel Ahmed al-Jabouri told Anadolu Agency.

Last year, Iraqi officials declared that Daesh's military presence in the country had been neutralized following a three-year conflict with the army backed by the U.S.-led coalition.

Nevertheless, Iraqi forces continue to carry out frequent operations with the aim of decisively ending the group’s lingering presence.
