WASHINGTON (AA) – The U.S.-led coalition struck a hospital east of Mosul on Wednesday at the request of the Iraqi military, the American military said in a statement.

According to the Central Command, Iraqi forces on Tuesday attempted to capture the Al Salam Hospital that was used by Daesh as “a base of operations and command and control headquarters”. Iraqi forces faced heavy resistance.

“On Dec. 7th, after Iraqi forces continued to receive heavy and sustained machine gun and rocket propelled grenade fire from ISIL fighters in a building on the hospital complex, they requested immediate support from the Coalition,” according to a statement by Central Command.

In response coalition aircraft conducted a precision strike on the location, it said.

The agency did not release details about civilian casualties in and around the hospital.
