Car-bomb kills 28 in Baghdad’s Sadr City

By Haydar Hadi

BAGHDAD (AA) – At least 28 people were killed by a car-bomb in Baghdad’s predominantly-Shia Sadr City district on Wednesday, the Iraqi army has said.

In a statement, the army’s Baghdad Operations Command said another 27 people had been injured in the attack, which had targeted a marketplace.

A local medical source told Anadolu Agency earlier on condition of anonymity due to fears of reprisal that at least 20 people had been killed and another 70 injured.

There has as yet been no claim of responsibility for Wednesday’s attack.

In recent years, bombings and shooting attacks — which often target civilians — have become a common occurrence in war-torn Iraq, especially capital Baghdad.

Iraq has suffered a devastating security vacuum since 2014, when the Daesh militant group overran the northern city of Mosul — the country’s second largest city — before going on to capture additional territories in both Iraq and neighboring Syria.
