Belgian police arrest man after car attack attempt

ANKARA (AA) – Belgian police arrested a man who tried to drive into a crowd in Antwerp on Thursday, local media have reported.

Antwerp police chief said the incident happened around 11 a.m. local time (1000GMT).

The vehicle drove into the commercial center in Meir, a large pedestrian center, at high speed.

Soldiers tried to intercept the driver, but the car — registered in France — sped through traffic lights and headed to the city’s dock area.

It was near the Sint Michiel dock area that the vehicle was intercepted by the security forces.

The driver was arrested. No one was injured.

The man was already known to police for possession of a prohibited weapon, broadcaster RTBF reported.
