OVIEDO, Spain (AA) – More than 50 people have been injured, one seriously, after a commuter train in Barcelona crashed into a buffer in downtown Barcelona, according to the Catalan emergency services.

Fifty-four people have been injured and one passenger is in a serious, but stable, condition. The train’s conductor also suffered light injuries.

The train crashed early Friday morning in Barcelona’s central Franca station. Footage of the incident shows the front end of the train smashed against the buffer with broken windows.

The cause of the accident is unknown at present and is under investigation, but it appears there was a brake failure as it tried to come to a stop.

Trains in Barcelona have been affected by the accident, but continue operating, local media report.

In light of the accident, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy phoned Catalan President Carles Puidgemont, according to a tweet by Puidgemont who said he “appreciates” the premier’s concern.
