ANKARA (AA) – A total of 406 people died and 871 others sustained serious injuries in the last five months from falling off crowded trains in India, according to the government railway police.

Niket Kaushik, the commissioner of railway police, said the number increased when compared to the same period last year, according to Hindustan Times on Sunday.

“A total of 360 people died after falling off trains till July, and 654 people died through the year, ” he said.

Kaushik said the reason of the accidents were the passengers hanging out the side of the overcrowded trains.

Anoop Shukla, a senior official for Railway Protection Force, said some 5,105 commuters were fined in 2018 for traveling on footboards.

“Last year, 3,318 had been fined, ” he said.
