ISTANBUL (AA) – Arab Spring started a new era in the Arab world, leader of Tunisia’s Ennahda movement Rachid Ghannouchi said Wednesday.

Speaking at the TRT World Forum in Istanbul, of which Anadolu Agency is the global communication partner, Ghannouchi emphasized the situation of the Arab world is even sadder than it was before 2010.

“People have tremendous regrets about the [Arab Spring] revolution,” Ghannouchi said.

“There are people who want to go back even to the time of executioners, because they think there was a little more security then. ”

Ghannouchi pointed out the “relatively better” situation in the Tunisian capital Tunis following the Arab Spring and attributed it to “constitutional compromise”.

“When there is a constitutional compromise, it brings democracy based on a consensus. That is, not a majority democracy, but a democracy based on unanimity, which is shared by everybody not imposed by a minority.”

He said a new era had started in the Arab world despite all negativities and voiced his hope that Arab countries would be “among free countries”.

He also appreciated Turkey’s stance during the Arab spring.
