Air Namibia halts operations

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AA) – The national flag carrier in Namibia has canceled all operations amid growing reports of colossal debts.

In a notice circulated to its 644 workers late Wednesday, Air Namibia said it was calling off all flight operations and suspending new bookings beginning Feb. 11.

“The reservation system for taking new bookings is also suspended,” it said.

The airline notified affected passengers to apply for refunds.

Air Namibia boasts a fleet of 10 aircraft, which includes two leased Airbus SE A330-200s.

The airline collapsed under financial woes as well as safety concerns in July, with the civil aviation authorities suspending Air Namibia’s license.

But the country’s high court stepped in and overturned the decision.

It is not clear whether the coronavirus pandemic contributed to the cancelation of operations at the airline.
