KABUL, Afghanistan (AA) – Afghanistan's election commission on Wednesday announced a two-month delay in landmark presidential polls to this September.

Hawa Alam Nuristani, the recently appointed woman chief election commissioner, told reporters in the capital Kabul that the crucial presidential polls face serious challenges.

Demanding a timely budget from the government, she said the presidential elections previously scheduled for July 20 would now be held on Sept. 28.

A total of 18 candidates are set to compete in the elections, including current President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, his power-sharing CEO Abdullah Abdullah, former National Security Adviser Mohammad Haneef Atmar, and seasoned former Mujahedeen leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar.
