Sierra Leone cancels football season on COVID-19 fears

ABUJA, Nigeria (AA) – Sierra Leone cancelled the 2019-2020 football season Thursday because of the coronavirus.

Leagues were canceled and there will be no championship or relegation, according to a statement from the country’s football union leagues.

Leagues in Sierra Leone were suspended in March.

The country reported 1,600 COVID-19 cases and 63 fatalities.

Since originating in China last December, the COVID-19 pandemic has claimed more than 622,000 lives in 188 countries and regions.

More than 15 million cases have been reported worldwide, while an excess of 8.6 million patients have recovered, according to figures compiled by US-based Johns Hopkins University.
