PSG wins eighth French league title

                By Fatih Erel</p>    <p>ISTANBUL (AA) - PSG claimed their eighth French league title on Sunday, the sixth in the last seven football seasons, after second-placed Lille's goalless draw with Toulouse.</p>    <p>On Sunday, Lille drew with Toulouse 0-0 and missed their tiny chance of catching PSG. </p>    <p>PSG will celebrate their eighth Ligue 1 title after home game against Monaco tonight.</p>        <p>The leader PSG have 81 points after 32 matches, followed by Lille with 65 points.

Basaksehir draw with Rizespor 1-1 in Turkish league

                                By Fatih Erel</p>    <p>ISTANBUL (AA) - Medipol Basaksehir suffered a blow in the Turkish football league title race after drawing with Caykur Rizespor on Sunday. </p>    <p>At home in Istanbul, Basaksehir drew with Caykur Rizespor 1-1 in the league on Sunday evening and remained at top with 62 points, just three points more than their closest challenger Galatasaray, in the Week 29 of Turkey's Spor Toto Super Lig.</p>    <p>Caykur Rizespor's Vedat Muriqi scored at 62nd minute while Basaksehir scored their goal with Edin Visca from a penalty shot during extra time.</p>    <p>Galatasaray defeated Istikbal Mobilya Kayserispor 3-1 on Saturday evening to continue chasing the title. Galatasaray increased its points total to 59 after the victory.</p>        <p>Basaksehir will play against Galatasarasay in an away match in the week of 33. If Basaksehir lose, Galatasaray may have a big chance to finish at top.

Football: Week 29 in Turkish league to kick off Friday

                By Fatih Erel </p>    <p>ISTANBUL (AA) - Kasimpasa will take on Bursaspor on Friday to begin Week 29 of Turkey's Spor Toto Super Lig.</p>    <p>At home, Galatasaray will face Istikbal Mobilya Kayserispor in Istanbul on Saturday while the leader Medipol Basaksehir will take on Caykur Rizespor in Istanbul on Sunday.</p>  <p> </p>  <p>As they reign over Turkey’s top football league, Basaksehir are comfortable at the top spot with 61 points, 5 more than their closest challenger Galatasaray.</p>    <p>Fenerbahce will play against Aytemiz Alanyaspor in an away match in Antalya on Sunday. The struggling Yellow Canaries have been suffering the worst season in their history, with only seven wins in 28 outings. Fenerbahce are now at the 14th place with 33 points, 28 points away from the top spot.</p>    <p>On Monday, Besiktas will play against Demir Grup Sivasspor in an away match. Two English clubs through to Champions League semis

            By Can Erozden</p>  <p>ANKARA (AA) - English clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool advanced to the UEFA Champions League semi-final stage late Wednesday.</p>  <p>Tottenham lost 4-3 to Manchester City in their quarter-final match in Manchester but earned their ticket to the semi-finals on away goals.</p>  <p>Man City had lost against Tottenham 1-0 in the first leg of the quarterfinals in London.</p>  <p>In the second leg, home team Manchester City took an early lead when Raheem Sterling put the ball into Tottenham’s net.</p>  <p>But Tottenham came back as South Korean star Son Heung-min scored two consecutive goals in the seventh and 10th minute of the game.</p>  <p>Only a minute later, however, Manchester City equalized when Bernardo Silva netted for his team. In the 21st minute of the game, Sterling found the net again, which meant a 3-2 lead for Manchester City.</p>  <p>In the second half, Man City's Argentine star Sergio Aguero made the score 4-2.</p>  <p>However, Tottenham's Spanish striker Fernando Llorente replied in the 73rd minute, making it 4-3 and enabling Tottenham to advance to the semi-finals.</p>  <p>Near the end of the game, Manchester City's Sterling scored for his team, but his goal was disallowed because he was offside.</p>  <p>Sterling's equalizer was ruled out by the referee, who watched the goal position on the VAR (Video Assistant Referee) system.</p>  <p>As a result, Tottenham advanced to the Champions League semi-finals despite the 4-3 loss against Manchester City.</p>  <p> </p>  <p>- Liverpool through to semis easily</p>  <p>Liverpool meanwhile booked its place in the semi-final phase as they eliminated Portugal's Porto in the last eight.</p>  <p>The team toppled Porto 4-1 in Wednesday's match in Portugal as the English side won 6-1 on aggregate.</p>  <p>Home team Porto's only goal was scored by Eder Militao in the 69th minute.</p>  <p>Liverpool's offensive threats were on duty in Portugal as Senegalese forward Sadio Mane, Egyptian star Mohamed Salah and Brazilian striker Roberto Firmino scored against Porto.</p>  <p>Liverpool's Dutch star Virgil van Dijk, playing as central defender, netted a goal for his team as well.</p>  <p>Following these games held Wednesday, the quarter-final stage of the Champions League ended.</p>  <p>As a result, Liverpool will meet Spanish powerhouse Barcelona in the semi-finals.</p>  <p>Meanwhile, Tottenham will take on Champions League underdogs Ajax.</p>  <p>The 2019 UEFA Champions League final will be held on June 1 at Madrid's Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

Italy to expel 54 Ajax fans ahead of Juventus match

            By Senhan Bolelli</p>  <p>MADRID (AA) - Italy will expel 54 Dutch Ajax fans after they were found to be in possession of weapons a day before the team’s Champions League clash against Juventus, the country’s Interior Ministry said Monday.</p>  <p>Police stopped two buses of Ajax supporters on the outskirts of Turin and confiscated knives, fireworks, pepper spray, flares, a hammer and a baton. They will be expelled after identity checks.</p>  <p>&quot;Thanks to the police. No one can be permitted to come to Italy to cause trouble. Our stadiums and our cities are closed to those who are violent,&quot; Interior Minister Matteo Salvini told reporters.</p>  <p>Dutch police similarly prevented some 120 Juventus fans from entering Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam earlier this month before the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals and some of them were detained after violence erupted between fans of the two teams.</p>  <p>*Writing by Sibel Morrow</p>  <p> 

Football: Results in top 5 European leagues

              By Fatih Erel</p>    <p>ISTANBUL (AA) - After the latest games in the top five European football leagues over the weekend, Liverpool, Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are in the top positions in their respective leagues.</p>    <p>In the English Premier League, Liverpool beat Chelsea 2-0 to remain at the top spot with five wins in a row. The runner-up Manchester City defeated Crystal Palace 3-1 to win nine matches in a row. They are currently at second place with another game at hand.</p>    <p>The leader Liverpool reached 85 points followed by Manchester City with 83 points.</p>    <p>In the Spanish La Liga, leader Barcelona drew with Huesca 0-0 while the runner-up Atletico Madrid beat Celta Vigo 2-0 to get closer to the top of the league.</p>    <p>Real Madrid will face Leganes in an away match tonight. </p>    <p>The leader Barcelona with 74 points were followed by Atletico Madrid with 65 points and Real Madrid with 60 points.</p>    <p>In Italy's Serie A, leader Juventus was defeated by SPAL 2-1 in an away match. They are still strong at the top of the league with 84 points.</p>    <p>Juventus are just one point away to become champs this season.  </p>    <p>The runner-up Napoli beat Chievo 3-1 to reach 67 points, 17 points from the top spot.</p>    <p>In Germany's Bundesliga, reigning champions Bayern Munich stun Fortuna Dusseldorf 4-1 to remain at the top spot while the runner-up Borussia Dortmund beat Mainz 05 2-1.</p>    <p>The leader Bayern Munich have 67 points, followed by Borussia Dortmund with 66 points.</p>    <p>In France's Ligue 1, leader PSG was defeated by the runner-up Lille 5-1 in an away match.</p>    <p>PSG are still very strong at the top of the league with 81 points, followed by Lille with 64 points, and Olympique Lyon with 56 points.</p>        <p>PSG are just one point away to become the champs this season and the sixth in the last seven years.

Football: Galatasaray unable to break spell at Kadikoy: 1-1

ISTANBUL (AA) – Galatasaray once again were unable to break spell at Kadikoy with 1-1 score on Sunday night in Turkey’s Spor Toto Super Lig.

Neither team was able to score in the first half of the match played at Fenerbahce's stadium in Istanbul.

Fenerbahce's Hasan Ali Kaldirim received a red card at the 45th minute and the home team finished the game with 10 men.

Galatasaray could not use this advantage to beat the home team to get closer to the top of the league.

Galatasaray scored the first goal with Henry Onyekuru's header at the 66th minute while Fenerbahce's Eljif Elmas equalized the score at 71st minute. The match ended 1-1.

With 56 points, Galatasaray is second and five points away from Turkey's Super Lig leader Medipol Basaksehir. While Fenerbahce is 14th position with 33 points.

Galatasaray has not been able to beat the Yellow Canaries in Fenerbahce's stadium in last 23 away matches for the past 19 years.

On Saturday, Besiktas defeated league leader Medipol Basaksehir 2-1. With the win, Besiktas raised their points to 53 and are third in Turkey's Super Lig.

As they reign over Turkey’s top football league, Basaksehir are at the top spot with 61 points, five more than their closest challenger Galatasaray.

Turkish wrestler wins bronze in European championships

ISTANBUL (AA) -Turkey's Emrah Kus won a bronze medal in the 2019 European Wrestling Championships in Romania on Sunday.

Competing in the men's 82-kg Greco-Roman category, Kus defeated German Hannes Wagner 2-1 to claim the medal in the tournament in Bucharest.

So far, Turkey has won two golds, one silver and two bronze medals in the Greco-Roman category at the tournament.

UPDATE – Turkish football legend Can Bartu dies at 83

             ADDS REMARKS FROM YOUTH AND SPORTS MINISTER; CONDOLENCES FROM FANS</p>  <p>By Jeyhun Aliyev</p>  <p>ANKARA (AA) - Can Bartu, a legendary figure in Turkish football and at Istanbul giants Fenerbahce, died at the age of 83, the club announced early Friday on its website.</p>  <p>&quot;We are experiencing the deep pain and sorrow of this great loss,&quot; it said.</p>  <p>The club also wished him God's mercy and extended condolences to his family, fans and the entire sports community.</p>  <p>Bartu, born on Jan. 31, 1936 in Istanbul, played both basketball and football for the club and was also known as &quot;Sinyor&quot;. He later became a sports journalist.</p>  <p>Youth and Sports Minister Mehmet Muharrem Kasapoglu expressed his sadness on Twitter over the death of a &quot;legendary figure of Turkish sports and Fenerbahce&quot;.</p>  <p>Kasapoglu also wished God's mercy on Bartu and extended condolences to his family and fans.</p>  <p>&quot;We will never forget you, Sinyor,&quot; he said.</p>  <p> Fans of Istanbul football giants Fenerbahce, Galatasaray and Besiktas also shared messages of condolence on social media.
