Turkish shares rise in closing session

ANKARA (AA) – Turkey’s benchmark index closed the day with a 651.08-point hike to reach 82,362.77 points on Tuesday.

The BIST 100 index rose by 0.80 percent with an over total trading volume of 5.5 billion Turkish liras (approximately $1.46 billion).

On the second day of the week, the banking and holding sector indices advanced by 1.68 and 0.68 percent, respectively. Among all sector indices, the tourism index increased the most with a 4.01 percent hike while the mining sector was the worst performer, falling 1.38 percent.

The most heavily-traded stocks were lenders Garanti Bank, Akbank and Halkbank, the country’s national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, and a major cement producer Afyon Cimento.

Electricity producer ODAS Elektrik enjoyed a 7.47 percent rise — the highest of the day — while TUMOSAN, which operates in the automotive industry by manufacturing tractors, sufferd a decrease of 3.99 percent, the largest decline of the day.

The Borsa Istanbul Gold Exchange index increased by 0.79 percent in value, with gold trading at 146,000 Turkish liras (around $38,741) per kilogram as of 4.30 p.m. (1330GMT).

The U.S. dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate decreased to stand at 3.7680 as of 5 p.m. (1400GMT) Tuesday, compared with 3.7840 in Monday’s closing session.
