BAGHDAD (AA) – At least four people protesting power outages were injured as a result of security forces' intervention in southern Iraq, according to local sources.

Hundreds of people gathered in front of the al-Aziziyah power plant to protest power cuts in the Wasit province. Security forces opened fire on unarmed demonstrators.

Eyewitnesses said four demonstrators were injured, three of them seriously, and the injured were taken to a hospital.

Iraqi Electricity Minister Majid Mahdi Hantush resigned last week, after escalating protests over the power shortage crisis.
