LAGOS, Nigeria (AA) – At least 30 armed bandits have been killed in an air strike on Nigeria’s northwest Zamfara state as security agencies tried to end violence in the region where hundreds of citizens have been killed this year.

“The Nigerian Air Force Task Force for Operation Diran Mikiya successfully executed air strikes that destroyed more armed bandit camps in Daji Bawar and Sunke villages in Zamfara State,” air force spokesman Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola said in in a statement on Sunday.

“Troops of sector 3 operation Sharan Daji later confirmed that over 30 armed bandits were neutralized while many others suffered injuries.”

He said the strikes followed intelligence reports that some bandits had survived air assaults on their hideouts in Anka local government area of the troubled states.

Zamfara has been rife with violence linked to armed bandits who authorities say specialize in stealing cattle and other valuables, resulting in thousands of people being displaced across the state.
