BRUSSELS (AA) – Three people were killed in a high-speed train crash in eastern Belgium late Sunday, officials said.

Dozens of passengers were injured when the train slammed into the back of a freight train in the town of Hermalle-Sous-Huy at around 11 p.m. local time (2100GMT).

Francis Dejon, the mayor of the district of Saint-Georges-sur-Meuse, described the impact as “very violent”.

Two of six carriages on the passenger train, which was travelling from Liege to Namur, were derailed, Belgian railways SNCB said in a statement.

An investigation is ongoing.
