ANKARA (AA) – The International Olympic Committee on Tuesday announced 29 athletes for the Refugee Olympic Team.

Refugee athletes from countries such as Syria and South Sudan will participate in 12 categories of the Tokyo Games this summer.

The athletes will arrive in Tokyo after testing negative for COVID-19.

The Refugee Olympic Team first competed in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

After this, the Olympic Committee decided to make this a permanent arrangement.

The committee assisted over 50 refugee athletes to train in the countries where they currently reside.

Former world record holder Kenyan athlete Tegla Loroupe will lead the team.

Tokyo Games are set to open on July 23.
