LAGOS, Nigeria (AA) – Two suicide bombers attacked a local market in northeastern Nigeria on Sunday morning, killing themselves and injuring 17 civilians, according to the country’s relief agency.

“Only the suicide bombers lost their lives while 17 persons were injured and evacuated to the Specialist Hospital Maiduguri,” National Emergency Management Agency spokesman Sani Datti said in a statement.

The bombers had explosives wired to their bodies and and they detonated at the same time after infiltrating the market, the statement added.

The blast comes just over a month after suicide bombers killed six persons in a displaced persons’ camp in Maiduguri, and three days after similar blasts killed 56 people and injured 177 at a market in neighboring Adamawa State.

Boko Haram militants, who have waged an insurgency in the country’s northeast since 2009, are believed to be behind the violence.
