TUNIS (AA) – The Tunisian authorities on Tuesday announced the recent arrest of two “terrorists” in the eastern province of Sousse, according to an Interior Ministry statement.
The statement, which was published on the ministry's website, said a security operation — which took place last week — had targeted two people suspected of planning terrorist attacks.
“The two individuals, aged 19 and 21, follow the ideology of the Daesh terrorist group,” the ministry statement read.
It went on to say that an analysis of their electronic devices had shown that they were in contact with “terrorist elements” in both Syria and Libya and had received training in making explosives.
Early last month, at least six security personnel were killed in a militant attack in western Tunisia.
In 2015, militants carried out three major attacks in Sousse, killing dozens, including security personnel.
The following year, Daesh carried out a brazen attack on Tunisia’s eastern town of Ben Guerdane near the Libyan border, killing 12 soldiers and seven civilians.
