CAIRO (AA) – An Egyptian doorman was killed and three others injured on Friday when an explosive device went off in southern Cairo, according to an Interior Ministry statement.

“Security authorities received reports of a loud blast on Algeria Street in Cairo’s southern Maadi district,” the statement read.

Civil defense personnel and bomb-disposal experts were immediately dispatched to the scene, it added.

“A doorman discovered a strange metal object while cleaning a garden,” according to the statement.

“The device exploded when he tampered with it,” it added.

The doorman was reportedly killed instantly, while his wife and two sons were injured by flying shrapnel.

The origin of the explosive device remains unknown.

Local authorities have since cordoned off the area and have launched an investigation into the incident.
