Tainted alcohol kills 84 in Iran

ISTANBUL (AA) – Tainted alcohol has killed 84 people over the past six weeks, according to Iran’s health ministry on Monday.

A total of 959 people have also been poisoned by tainted alcohol in four Iranian provinces, ministry spokesman Iraj Harirchi told reporters.

He said 305 people have been treated for kidney damage and 27 suffered eye damage.

The sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited to Muslim citizens in Iran.

Under Iranian law, those who produce, buy or sell alcoholic beverages can be sentenced to imprisonment and/or lashing.
