BEIJING (AA) – China’s top disciplinary watchdog announced Thursday that a former assistant foreign minister has been expelled from the country’s Communist Party for several alleged violations of its codes of conduct.

The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection accused Zhang Kunsheng of having accepted money and gifts, joined private clubs and exchanged power for sex.

State news agency Xinhua cited the statement as saying that Zhang was also suspected of having accepted bribes in exchange for taking advantage of his position to seek benefits for others.

Judicial authorities have undertaken the case against the former diplomat.

President Xi Jinping launched a wide-reaching crackdown on corruption among officials in 2013, since when tens of thousands of suspects — including dozens of high-profile individuals at the top of the Communist Party — have been investigated.
