US: Former governor Deval Patrick ends presidential bid

By Servet Gunerigok

WASHINGTON (AA) – Former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick dropped out of the U.S. presidential race Wednesday, leaving eight candidates in the Democratic primary field.

His departure came a day after the New Hampshire primary that saw Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont win the second contest in the race for the presidential nomination.

"The vote in New Hampshire last night was not enough for us to create the practical wind at the campaign’s back to go on to the next round of voting," Patrick said in a statement. "So I have decided to suspend the campaign, effective immediately."

Patrick joined the Democratic field in November 2019.

According to an NBC News report, the 63-year-old failed to register in the Iowa caucuses last week and in New Hampshire, he received just 0.4% of the vote.

Businessman Andrew Yang and Colorado Senator Michael Bennet ended their presidential bids Tuesday night, as well.

The eight democrats still competing are Sanders, former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, billionaire Mike Bloomberg, former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg, congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, Senator Amy Klobuchar, businessman Tom Steyer and Senator Elizabeth Warren.
