UPDATE – Turkish stocks down 1.14% at midweek close

ANKARA (AA) – Turkey's benchmark stock index ended the midweek trading down 1.14% to close at 97,015.02 points on Wednesday.

After starting the day at 98,404.68 points, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index fell 1,120.28 points from Tuesday's close of 98,135.30 points.

During Wednesday's trading, the BIST 100 peaked at 98,456.13 points while its daily low was 96,912.48 points — 27 stocks on the index rose, 66 fell, and seven were flat compared to the previous close.

The benchmark index posted a daily trading volume of 6.22 billion Turkish liras ($1.1 billion), as it closed the day with a market value of some 641 billion Turkish liras ($113 billion).

By market capitalization, Turkish conglomerate Koc Holding, private lender Garanti Bankasi, iron and steel producer Eregli were the leading BIST 100 companies.

The highest trading volumes were seen in the stocks of state-run lender Halkbank, national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, and Garanti Bankasi.

Shares of real estate investment trust Ihlas Gayrimenkul (IHLGM) were the top gainers — up 8.64% — and stocks of IT company Indeks Bilgisayar (INDES) fell the most with 5.70% drop.

One ounce of gold was sold for $1,304.30 at the daily close in Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets versus the previous close of $1,307.20.

A barrel of Brent oil was sold for $71.22 as of 6.10 p.m. local time (1510GMT) on Wednesday — with a day range of $70.57 to $71.32.

At the beginning of 2019, the price of Brent oil was around $53 per barrel.
