ISTANBUL and GAZIANTEP, Turkey (AA) – At least 26 people, including 17 foreign nationals, have been arrested for suspected links to the Daesh terrorist network, Turkish police said on Thursday.

Teams from Istanbul police’s counter-terrorism branch carried out an operation against people reportedly linked to Daesh and who had been in Syria.

The operation, backed by Turkish special forces, targeted 14 addresses in nine Istanbul districts.

Separately, a suspected Daesh militant who was allegedly planning a suicide attack on the anniversary of last July’s coup attempt was remanded in custody in the southern province of Gaziantep on Thursday.

The suspect, who was caught with a fake ID on July 13, allegedly illegally crossed the Syrian border and had cooperated with five other people detained last month in the southern province of Hatay.

Over 319 people have lost their lives in Daesh attacks in Turkey, where the terror organization has targeted civilians in suicide bomb, rocket and gun attacks.
