Sudanese demonstrate to demand civilian government

KHARTOUM (AA) – Thousands of Sudanese on Thursday demonstrated outside army headquarters in Khartoum to demand that executive authority be relinquished to a civilian government.</p> <p>Last week, Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir was ousted by the army following months of popular demonstrations against his 30-year rule.</p> <p>Al-Bashir was replaced by a Military Transitional Council (MTC), which is now running the country’s affairs for a two-year “transitional period” during which presidential elections will eventually be held.</p> <p>On Wednesday, the Sudanese Professionals Association, which has led months of anti-regime demonstrations, submitted its list of demands to the MTC leadership.</p> <p>Those demands reportedly include the speedy formation of a civilian government, a civilian presidential council (in which the army would enjoy limited representation) and a functioning parliament.
